The Big Bang Theory

The Competition Experimentation

COLD OPEN

FADE IN:

INT. SHELDON AND LEONARD’S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM DAY (DAY 1)

         (Sheldon, Leonard)

SHELDON AND LEONARD SIT ON THE COUCH WITH THEIR LAPTOPS PLAYING WORLD OF WARCRAFT.

SHELDON

I’m just saying, Leonard, that my Level 30 Night Elf Mage has gotten to the point where there’s nothing that can challenge me any more. It’s kind of exciting.

LEONARD

(SARCASTICALLY) Aside from the part where you’ve been talking about him for ten minutes straight, I can’t imagine how it couldn’t be exciting. Let’s just play in silence for a little while, okay?

SHELDON

Well, okay, Mr. Grumpy.

THEY PLAY IN SILENCE. SHELDON LOOKS UP OVER AT LEONARD CURIOUSLY. HE REMAINS SILENT. LEONARD SIGHS.

LEONARD

What is it, Sheldon?

SHELDON

You’ll pardon me for breaking the silence, but I couldn’t help but notice your Level 29 Orc Warrior banging his head on the wall.

LEONARD

I made a newbie mistake. I let another player swindle me out of all my gold.

SHELDON

That’s pretty serious! What are you going to do about it? Oh, I know: we can find out where the guys lives and make him give it back.

LEONARD

Right, because that plan worked so well last time. No, I’m going to get my stuff back the honest way.

SHELDON

Suit yourself. Let me know if you change your mind.

THEY PLAY. SHELDON’S COMPUTER DINGS, INDICATING A SKYPE CALL. SHELDON IGNORES IT.

LEONARD

Aren’t you going to answer that?

SHELDON

Oh, it’s probably just Amy begging me to take her back.

LEONARD

Somehow, I doubt that.

SHELDON SIGHS AND ANSWERS THE CALL. HE LOOKS SURPRISED. DR. SIEBERT CAN BE SEEN ON SHELDON’S COMPUTER.

SHELDON

Dr. Siebert? To what do I owe the pleasure?

DR. SEIBERT

Let’s skip the pleasantries, Dr. Cooper, I have a proposition for you. We’re hosting a science competition on campus at the end of next week, and I’d like you to head it

SHELDON

Well, I appreciate the offer, but I’m not very good a party-planning.

DR. SIEBERT

It’s not a request. It’s either you or Dr. Kripke, and--

SHELDON

I’ll get started on the setup right away, sir.

DR. SIEBERT

Good. See you first thing in the morning.

THE CALL ENDS. LEONARD LOOKS AT SHELDON WITH A CURIOUS SQUINT.

LEONARD

You agreed to that a little too quickly.

SHELDON

I guess I did. When he mentioned Kripke, I just kind of went for it. Do you suppose I might be Pavlov-ed against Kripke’s name?

LEONARD

(CHUCKLING) Yeah, sure. I’ll do a scientific study on it someday.

SHELDON

You’re a true friend, Leonard. Now I can get back to being the apex of Night Elf civilization.

LEONARD GROANS IN ANNOYANCE.

FADE OUT.

ACT ONE

SCENE A

FADE IN:

INT. PHYSICS DEPARTMENT CAFETERIA - DAY (DAY 2)

(Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, Howard, Kripke)

SHELDON, LEONARD, RAJ, AND HOWARD ARE HAVING LUNCH.

HOWARD

(TO SHELDON) I heard you got nominated to set up the charity science competition.

LEONARD

The weird part is he actually agreed to it. You know how Sheldon is with event-planning.

SHELDON

I’m sitting right here, you know. Besides, Dr. Siebert made it difficult to refuse. We drew out all the plans this morning.

RAJ

Maybe we can help out. We can help coordinate the competitors or serve as judges.

SHELDON

Thanks, but I think I can handle the coordination and the judging.

KRIPKE APPROACHES THE TABLE.

KRIPKE

Well, I certainly hope so. Heaven forbid something should happen at the competition that would embarrass you in front of Dr. Siebert again. That would make it what? Four times now?

HOWARD

That’s oddly specific, Kripke. What are you planning?

KRIPKE

(INNOCENTLY) Planning? Me? I would never. I was just curious why Siebert would entrust something so important to someone like Sheldon.

SHELDON

I’m just theorizing here, but maybe it’s because I never tried to use university money for personal gain.

KRIPKE

I admit the retreat idea was a poor judgement call on my part, but this science competition is different. It’s for charity, and one way or another, I am going to prove that Siebert made a mistake choosing you for the task.

KRIPKE WALKS AWAY.

SHELDON

(CALLING AFTER) Oh, yeah? Well, you’re still a stupid head!

RAJ

Wow. I just had the strangest feeling of deja vu...

SHELDON

Guys, I changed my mind. I may need your help at the competition after all.

CUT TO:

SCENE B

INT. PENNY’S APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - NIGHT (DAY 2)

(Penny, Amy, Leonard)

PENNY AND AMY SIT ON THE COUCH LOOKING AT PENNY’S LAPTOP.

PENNY

You sure that’ll work?

AMY

Why wouldn’t it? It’s not like it’s brain surgery.

LEONARD WALKS IN.

LEONARD

Honey, I’m home.

PENNY

(CHUCKLES) Clever, Leonard.

AMY

I thought it was funny.

LEONARD

Oh, hi, Amy. I didn’t realize you were coming over.

AMY

Actually, I was about to leave. Sheldon wants me to drop by and talk about helping him with the science competition.

PENNY

You two are talking again?

AMY

No. He has been calling every five minutes for the last hour, and I want him to stop.

PENNY

Okay then. Well, thanks for helping me with that... uh, thing earlier.

AMY

Anytime.

AMY LEAVES. LEONARD SITS NEXT TO PENNY.

PENNY

Are you okay? You look like someone just killed Captain Kirk.

LEONARD

Come on, don’t joke about that.

PENNY

Sorry, honey. So, do you want to talk about it?

LEONARD

I made a rookie mistake on WoW and lost all of my gold. I’m not really all that upset about it. I mean, it’s just a game.

PENNY PUTS HER HAND ON LEONARD’S ARM AND SMILES.

PENNY

You don’t have to hide the truth from me, Leonard. Believe it or not, I know how you feel, and I’m here for you. What are you going to do?

LEONARD

Sheldon suggested finding where the player lived in real life and make him return my stuff.

PENNY

Right. Because that worked so well last time.

LEONARD

(LAUGHS) Yeah, that’s what I said. No, I’ll get it back legitimately in-game. By the way, about the science competition at the University at the end of the week. Wanna come?

PENNY

(SARCASTICALLY) Yay, that sounds exciting.

LEONARD

It’s okay if you don’t want to. I’m mostly going because Sheldon is in charge and has asked for some assistance from his friends.

PENNY

Sheldon’s in charge? Oh, boy. I hope the university has good insurance... or a very good counselor.

FADE OUT.
